The Institute for Mathematics and Informatics (IMI) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) was established in 1947. Since then it has been a leading Bulgarian centre for research and training of highly qualified specialists and exercising an efficient, long-range, consistent policy related to the fundamental trends in the development of mathematics, computer science and information technologies. IMI has a total staff of 238 (175 researchers, incl. 105 full and associate professors) in 21 departments.

The mission of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is to conduct research in fundamental and applied branches of mathematics and computer science (which not only enriches its fundaments but also leads to direct or indirect applications), to undertake research strategies in harmony with national and EU priorities, and to educate highly qualified young specialists in these areas.

Though the main profile of IMI is its research activities, it plays a significant role also in education. Most members of the research staff have part-time contracts with universities, and there teach courses varying from introductory to very advanced ones for senior or graduate students. The strongest educational impact of IMI–BAS appears at the MSc and PhD level. One of the Institute’s most successful activities is supporting and enhancing young talents (including secondary-school students). It is best manifested through the founding of the High School Students Institute of Mathematics and Informatics (HSSI) in the World Mathematical Year 2000 as an affiliated institution of IMI.
