The Iceland University of Education merged with the University of Iceland and became the School of Education at the University of Iceland in 2008. It educates teachers for preschools, basic schools and upper secondary schools, sports and health scientists, social educators and leisure professionals and is by far the largest educational institute in Iceland. It offers Bachelors, Master and Doctoral programmes and educates almost every teacher for primary and lower secondary school in Iceland. The majority of upper secondary school teachers complete their pedagogical studies at the School of Education. The total number of students enrolled at the University of Iceland is 14,000 and the number of employees is 1200.
